In 2011, Thomas founded the boutique publishing company, Made Publishers. Made independently designed, produced, and published over 20 publications.
Starting with the first publication, Process Journal, Thomas worked as the Creative Director and Editor in Chief. His role was dedicated to the design, content, and publication of each edition.
As the company continued to grow, two new publications were added, MADE and Nourished Journal. These additional publications extended the breadth of Made’s content into adjacent design disciplines, as well as health, wellbeing, and lifestyle.
Made’s publications generated a loyal following and were greatly respected by industry peers. They were sold in over 150 stockists globally, including MoMA (New York) and the Design Museum (London). Several of Made’s publications were recognized with awards, including from AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association) and Mohawk Fine Paper.
As Made Publishers’ first publication, Process Journal was a leap of faith and completely self-funded by Thomas. On initial publication, it sold out within the first few weeks. As Editor in Chief and Creative Director, Thomas was responsible for the content, creative direction, and design of all 12 editions of the journal.
Published quarterly, Process comprised in-depth profiles and interviews on graphic design and featured some of the world's most influential and respected designers to provide a unique insight into their work and creative process.
As the publication’s intended readership was design professionals, Thomas experimented with unique printing and production techniques, such as a 6-color printing process and embellishments, and specialized binding and paper stocks.
The publication’s design was inspired by the International Typographic Style, following a strict grid system and a highly considered layout. Meticulously typeset and heavily scrutinized by its creator, each edition featured over 100 pages of content and had the production qualities of a collectable book.
Dedicated to documenting the workings of the modern maker, MADE’s content covered design, architecture, fashion, interior design, photography, and the culinary world with the aim of getting into the minds of creative individuals and finding out how they work and what inspires them to create. Thomas worked as the designer of MADE and partnered with Editor in Chief Amber Hourigan on the content and creative direction.
MADE’s content featured a selection of in-depth profiles and interviews, providing a behind-the-scenes look and insight into the process of many inspiring individuals.
Every page in MADE was designed with content at the forefront to provide an engaging reading experience, rich with imagery and visual content. Contemporary in style, the typography was detailed and consistently and precisely applied throughout the publication. MADE was produced on high-quality uncoated stocks using a 5-colour printing process, and had over 100 pages of content.
Nourished’s editorial direction was built on a foundation of knowledge and insight, interviews with inspiring individuals, uplifting and informative editorial, recipes, travel stories, and practical information on health and wellbeing.
The aim of Nourished Journal was to create an inspiring publication that served as a platform for readers, contributors, and like-minded individuals to share, learn, and connect. Thomas worked as the designer of Nourished Journal and partnered with Editor in Chief Amber Hourigan on the content and creative direction.
Nourished’s design could be described as ‘classic contemporary’, drawing from traditional editorial inspirations with contrasting contemporary typography. Each layout provides a luxurious design filled with unique editorial photography commissioned specifically for the publication. Produced with both coated and uncoated paper stocked, the publication provided a unique tactile experience.
In addition to the print publication, Nourished was also available digitally on the Apple App Store with a dedicated digital edition, augmented by interactive digital-only content.
